About Variable Wattage Mods & kits

Variable wattage mods regulate the power output of your vape's battery or batteries by adjusting the wattage. A microprocessor controls the settings and also runs safety features that prevent the device from overheating or short-circuiting. Essentially, you tell your vape how much power you want and the battery will provide it.

Mods with variable wattage are popular among vapers because they allow you to easily tailor the vaping experience to your preferences, changing the battery power levels to suit your different coil resistances, wire sizes, and e-liquid varieties. Similar to how vaping using lower resistance coils can provide a more intense vaping experience, increasing the wattage of your device can also help you access these great flavours and vapour clouds.

Another benefit of vaping using a variable wattage mod is that you can switch easily between high-powered sub-ohm vaping with massive clouds of vapour to a lower wattage everyday vape and back again.

Plus, vaping using a mod with variable wattage is also extremely safe because they are built with advanced safety protection features.

Variable wattage vs variable voltage

When looking at variable wattage devices, you may also come across the term variable voltage. This is another feature that some mods have, although variable voltage is less popular than wattage. The main difference between variable voltage and wattage is that variable wattage mods automatically identify the resistance of your vape coils so they can provide the right power output, whereas variable voltage mods require you to do this manually.

Variable wattage vs temperature control

Temperature control is another feature that many vape mods have. Although it is similar to variable wattage, there are a few key differences.

Temperature control or TC modes allow you to set the temperature of the e-cigarette and ensure that it doesn't go beyond your chosen parameters. In many mods, using temperature control mode will automatically adjust the wattage, while in others you'll need to do it manually.

Temperature control is useful because it keeps the temperature of the vape consistent, even when taking long drags which would usually increase the heat. This is better for your coils and reduces the likelihood of them burning out.

A key thing to remember is that different coil materials are better for variable wattage or temperature control. Variable wattage vapes use static resistance coils (in other words, coils that remain at the same resistance) such as coils made of kanthal or nichrome. However, these coils are more likely to overheat and burn out because they cannot adjust to the current.

Temperature control is best used with resistance increasing coils, which are able to increase their resistance as temperature increases. These coils are often made of stainless steel, nickel, or titanium.

Today, many mods that feature variable wattage will also have temperature control modes.

Variable Wattage Mod & Kits FAQs

When you buy coils, they will often tell you their recommended wattage range on the packaging. For example, plus-ohm coils with a resistance of 1.0 ohm or above will often require a wattage in the 10s and 20s, whereas sub-ohm coils below 1.0 ohm function better in higher ranges.

We recommend starting at the lower end of the recommended range and then gradually increasing the wattage to find your ideal power.

The amount of power being delivered to a vape determines the temperature of the vape, which can have an impact on the flavour of your e-liquid. On the whole, fruity e-liquid flavours taste better at lower temperatures while strong e-liquid flavours like coffee or tobacco taste better at hotter temperatures.

High temperatures help the subtleties of the e-liquid flavour shine through. However, if the wattage and temperature are too high, this can lead to burning out the coils which can make your e-liquid taste burnt.

Without a doubt, all vapers are different so you might find that you prefer different e-liquids at different wattages - it's worth experimenting to find out what you like.
