Uwell Caliburn AK2 vs GK2

If you're new to the world of vaping, having a variety of options can be overwhelming. Thankfully, our collection of pod kits and devices is ideal for both beginners and experienced vapers alike, providing plenty of options without the confusion.

One brand that is worth exploring for both novice and expert vapers is Uwell. Founded in 2015, the company has since become one of the leading brands and biggest names in vaping, known especially for their top quality pod systems - two of which we'll explore further in this blog.

The Uwell Caliburn AK2 and Uwell Caliburn GK2 pod kit are two great, compact devices which are designed with beginners in mind and are perfect for mouth-to-lung (MTL) vaping.

Keep reading to learn about the similarities and differences to find the perfect Uwell pod kit for you.

Design

The Uwell Caliburn GK2 kit is a lightweight pod system, made from zinc alloy making it both durable and portable. The GK2 is impressively small, measuring just 7.3 cm x 4.2 cm x 1.6 cm making it fit comfortably in the palm of the hand and is a great alternative to longer devices that feature a more cigarette/pen-style design. The small, square shaped pod system also comes with a more unique design feature not found on many vapes - the lanyard ring. With this, you can wear the device around your neck, if you so wish.

The GK2 features a unique pattern on the face of the pod system that looks like something straight out of blade-runner, with either a solid colour or seamlessly blended gradient around the side of the device. This helps the colours of the GK2 to really pop, whilst a glass panel on the face of the device also helps to add another layer of protection. The Caliburn GK2 is available in four colours, including:

  • Aurora Green
  • Matte Black
  • Ocean Flame
  • Ribbon Red

The Uwell Caliburn AK2 pod system is similar in size and shape, measuring 6.8 cm x 4.3 cm x 1.2 cm. It is ever so slightly smaller (believe it or not!), but looks almost identical in shape to the GK2. This means it also comes with a lanyard ring allowing vapers to wear the device as they please.

The diagonal striped design is reminiscent of the famous Manchester Haçienda Club, giving it a slightly more subtle look that the GK2. If you’re looking for more colour options, this device has a much wider selection available, including:

  • Black
  • Daylight Walker
  • Gloomy Green
  • Graphite Grey
  • Midnight Rider
  • Neon Orange
  • Sakura Pink
  • Turquoise Blue

Features

Both the GK2 and AK2 are inhale-activated only, meaning there’s no fire button to be found anywhere on the device. As well as this, Uwell have designed both devices with a nifty e-liquid window on the pod system to help you closely monitor your e-liquid levels. The e-liquid window is larger on the AK2 than on the GK2, however. A small airflow inlet is also present on the side of the AK2 which isn’t found on the GK2.

When it comes to the power output, the GK2 takes the crown with a fixed 690mAh battery in comparison to the AK2’s 520mAh battery. LED indicators on both devices also keep you up to date with your current battery life and indicate different potential safety issues. However, a feature unique to the GK2 is that it also offers haptic feedback, meaning that as well as LED lights the device also vibrates to provide an interactive and intuitive vaping experience.

Uwell have implemented multiple safety features into both devices, including short circuit protection, low voltage protection, overtime protection and overtime protection. For added safety, Uwell have also included three small venting holes on the base of the GK2 to help keep the battery cool and stop it from overheating.

Pods

The GK2 and AK2 pods both have a 2ml capacity that can be refilled. This gives you the option of choosing from a wide selection of e-liquids and flavours to try.

The Uwell Caliburn A2 replacement pods come with built-in mesh coils, available in only a 0.9ohm resistance. This is great for those looking for a straightforward, no-fuss MTL vaping experience. They also offer long-lasting performance thanks to their PCTG construction. Plus, the magnetic connection ensures simple removal and installation.

However, if you’re looking for a bit more scope for customisation then the Uwell Caliburn G2 replacement pods might be more to your liking. These pods use replaceable coils and offer a wider selection of coils to choose from. And don’t worry about swapping out coils as the push-fit system makes it easy to install and remove them.

The G2 pods also feature a progressive airflow adjustable wheel to allow vapers to fine-tune the airflow to create a tighter airflow they desire.

Both pods feature an easy to use top-filling mechanism which helps to minimise spills and mess. The leak-resistant design of both pods minimises the risk of mess or waste.

Coils

When it comes to coils, the AK2's fixed coil is a great option and a simple solution for those that want to avoid the hassle of stock coil tanks. This model makes use of mesh coils with a resistance of 0.9 ohm for a smooth, slightly airy MTL experience.

On the other, the replaceable coils of the GK2 pod vape offer versatility, as the entire Caliburn G coil range is compatible. This means you can transform your MTL vape into an RDTL (restricted direct to lung) device by choosing from a 0.8ohm coil all the way to a tighter, more discreet vape with the 1.0 ohm and 1.2 ohm coils. Mesh coils ensure great performance is guaranteed and coil resistances of 0.8 ohm or 1.2 ohm are available.

You might think that the option of replaceable coils will make these confusing pod kits. But thanks to their straightforward design, even novice vapers will quickly get used to them.

Battery Life

In terms of battery life, the USB Type-C rechargeable batteries of these pod kits offer a quick charge that holds up well.

In most cases, you'll be able to charge your battery in around 30 to 45 minutes when using the correct charging lead. At the very least, you’ll be able to get enough power into your vape to keep you going if you're short of time.

A full charge will generally give you enough battery life to last a full day, but this will come down to how you use your device and your vaping habits.

With both devices, an LED indicator lets you know the status of your battery life. When the device is in use, a green light indicates that you have between 60% and 100% of your battery left. A blue light lets you know the battery has between 30% and 60% power and a red light lets you know you have less.

The GK2 has a noticeably better battery life than the other pod system because of its size. This improved battery and the ability to use different replaceable coils are making pod waste something you won't need to worry about.

Performance

All in all, both pod systems offer an impressive performance. Both provide smooth vapour and offer excellent bursts of flavour with each inhale. The inhale activation makes for intuitive vaping, with the haptic feedback on the GK2 only adding to this.

The GK2 offers a slightly more powerful vaping experience with a 18W max output compared to the AK2’s 15W output. This output combined with the three different coil resistances of the GK2 offers a slightly more flexible and airy vaping experience.

However, whilst the AK2 only has one coil resistance to choose from, it does feature adjustable airflow, allowing vapers to get the vaping experience and performance you want.

When it comes to flavour, the AK2 and GK2 definitely deliver thanks to Uwell’s PRO-Focs technology.

The Verdict?

Trying to decide which of these two fantastic Caliburn pod systems reigns supreme is almost impossible, so we won't. Both have a definite box tick in our books but it will ultimately come down to your personal preference, but you can rest assured that going with either is sure to give you your desired vaping experience.

Both offer great benefits. For example, the GK2 gives users the opportunity to tailor their vaping experience by using different coils. Alternatively, the hassle-free built-in coils of the AK2 might be more suitable for others.

One thing worth noting is that the GK2 comes with a USB type-C charging cable, while the AK2 does not. And while the GK2 model comes with spare coils as well as a 2ml refillable GK2 pod, the AK2 does not come with spare coils but you do get two A2 refillable pods.
