About Vape Mods
Vape mods are more powerful than your typical vape pen or disposable vape. They have a longer battery life with more powerful batteries, advanced settings and modes such as temperature control, variable wattage, and more. Vape mods are also sometimes called box mods because of their box-like appearance, although these days mods come in a variety of shapes and sizes.
Built-in vs external batteries
Some smaller and cheaper vape mods use built-in batteries while others use external batteries that can be removed and replaced. The main benefit of using a built-in battery is that there is no need to buy different chargers or replacement batteries - you just charge the vape using the USB-C charger. However, when the battery eventually dies after a year or two it cannot be replaced. At this point, you'll need to buy a new vape.
External batteries are more common in high-powered and more expensive box mods. These can provide greater amounts of power and have a longer lifespan because the removable batteries can be replaced when necessary. Moreover, using multiple external batteries means that you can vape with one battery while charging the other in an external charger, meaning you never have vape downtime.
Mods with external batteries can be single or dual battery mods. While single battery mods are often lighter and more compact, dual battery mods have a longer battery life and can provide more power than those with single batteries.
Modes
There are many modes that box mods might feature to allow you to tailor your vaping experience to your preferences.
One of the most common modes is variable wattage. This mode allows you to alter the amount of power being delivered to your coils. This means you can customise the vape to suit MTL (mouth to lung) or DTL (direct to lung) vaping without having to change the whole vape setup.
Another mode is temperature control, which automatically detects the temperature of your coils and allows you to set a limit after which the mod will cut power to them. Temperature control mode helps you avoid dry hits and burnt out coils, improving your vaping experience.
Some box mods will feature a smart mode, which is where the device automatically decides which wattage is right for your coil resistance.
Bypass mode allows you to use the full available voltage of your battery, ignoring the mod's power regulation features. The mod will still use its safety features such as short circuit protection, however you'll be able to use more power.
Vape Mod FAQs
You don't have to use a vape tank that is made by the same brand as your mod. Vape mods usually have the regular 510 thread which connects the mod to the tank. Because this is a fairly universal connector, you shouldn't have trouble finding a vape tank that fits.
While browsing information about vaping, you may have come across the terms regulated mod and unregulated or mech mod. These are two different types of box mod with some key differences.
Most of the box mods on Vaping 101's website are regulated mods - vape mods that have built-in safety features that prevent short-circuiting or overheating.
In contrast, unregulated mods, also called mechanical or mech mods, do not have these additional features. In an unregulated box mod, the battery is directly connected to the coil. Vapers who use unregulated mods need to have a strong understanding of ohm's law and vaping safety. They are usually used with an RDA (Rebuildable Dripping Atomiser).
Mechanical mods used to be more popular in the vaping community, but these days regulated mods are so much safer and better performing that most vapers opt for regulated mods instead.
The high power output of box mods makes them suited for use with sub-ohm tanks and coils. However, e-cig mods with variable wattage can also be used with MTL tanks and coils which require lower power outputs. One of the benefits of variable wattage vape mods is that they allow you to switch easily between MTL and DTL vaping.
Vape mods are ideal for vapers who are looking for a step up from their current vape pen or vape kit. We don't recommend them to complete beginners.
If you're new to vaping, we recommend checking out our all in one vape kits or starter kits. These contain everything you need to start vaping and you can get beginner-kits from some of the biggest names in vaping, including Voopoo, Vaporesso, GeekVape, Smok, and more.
Squonk mods are a type of mod designed as an alternative to rebuildable dripping atomisers which allow you to vape for longer without having to drip more e-liquid onto the coil. With RDAs, vapers need to drip e-liquid after every few puffs. Squonk mods instead incorporate the e-liquid bottle into the side of the mod and include a liquid feeder so that you can squeeze the e-juice into the coil and wick.
Squonk mods are popular among sub-ohm vapers because they provide impressive flavours and vapour production. They also are useful because you do not need to carry around separate bottles of e-liquid for refilling.
