What Are Sub-Ohm Coils?

When it comes to sub-ohm vaping, it's all about big clouds. The term ‘sub-ohm’ refers to coils with a resistance of below 1.0 ohm. Whereas traditional coils used in vaping devices typically have a resistance level of 1.0 ohm or higher, sub-ohm coils have lower resistance usually ranging from 0.1 to 0.9 ohms. The lower the resistance of the coil, the bigger the cloud production will be.

The main purpose of using sub-ohm vape coils is to enhance vapour production and increase the intensity of the vaping experience. Lower resistance requires more powerful devices in order to heat them to higher temperatures, which then creates more clouds. Sub-ohm vaping is often associated with a direct-to-lung style vape, where the vapour is inhaled directly into the lungs rather than holding it in the mouth first.

It's important to note that sub-ohm vaping requires not just low resistance coils, but also a sub-ohm tank and vape device with a higher power output. Most commonly, these vape mod will be used but there are also a range of pod systems that operate at higher wattages too. Sub-ohm tanks are designed specifically for use with these types of coils as they allow for extra airflow.

When browsing our rage, you will find that the majority of these coils are mesh coils. This is because mesh coils have a larger surface area compared to more traditional coils, which allow for more even heating distribution and for more e-liquid to be vaporised. This all helps to contribute to the larger clouds associated with sub-ohm vaping.

Sub Ohm Coils FAQs

The type of e-liquid you pick is very important when using sub-ohm coils. The purpose of sub-ohm is to produce lots of flavour and large clouds of vapour, therefore it is important to use high VG e-liquids with low nicotine levels. E-liquids that are higher in PG are more ideal for MTL (mouth-to-lung) vape styles as it gives a greater nicotine hit and less vapour production.

There is no real 'better' vape coil. The answer to this really depends on what you're looking to get from your experience and whether you enjoy sub-ohming or not.

Sub-ohm coils have a lower resistance compared to regular coils, allowing for higher wattage and increased vapour production. A lot of sub-ohm coils also feature mesh designs, though more and more MTL coils are starting to feature this design too. Sub-ohm coils are specifically engineered to accommodate the demands of sub-ohm vaping, resulting in more intense flavour and denser clouds.

Putting nic salts in your sub-ohm tank is going to result in a very unpleasant experience. Low nicotine or even zero nicotine vape juice with a high VG percentage should be used when vaping with sub-ohm coils.

Since sub-ohm devices vaporise more e-liquid with every draw, you often experience bigger hits of flavour than you otherwise would. This helps vapers to get more concentrated amounts of flavour with every inhale.

Sub-ohm vaping is generally recommended for experienced vapers due to its higher power requirements and potential for increased e-juice consumption. Beginners may find it beneficial to start with higher resistance coils and gradually transition to sub-ohm vaping once they become more familiar with the devices and their capabilities.

A sub-ohm coil will typically last anywhere between 4 days to a week. Of course, this will depend on how frequently it is used and at what temperature the coil is being heated to. The higher the temperature, the faster the coil will burn out.
