What Are Vape Tanks?

Vape tanks play a crucial role in anyone's vaping experience, and are responsible for two very important jobs. The first of these is to contain the e-liquid which is then vaporised by the coil that is also housed inside the tank. Every vape tank comes with a 2ml capacity and you can find them in various shapes, sizes, and designs, offering different features to cater to individual preferences. Whether you're a cloud chaser, flavour enthusiast, or seeking a balance between both, choosing the right vape tank is essential for an optimal vaping experience.

Vape tanks are slightly more complex than replacement pods, offering a bit more variety and range. They are found in a few different types including your more standard sub-ohm and MTL tanks as well as RDAs and RTAs which are typically used by very experienced vapers.

Vape tanks are made up of a glass cylinder, the drip tip, the coil, the base and top cap. You might see that vape tanks often have something called a 510 connector which is a threading that allows it to be connected to a range of different vape mods on the market.

MTL Tanks

MTL (Mouth-to-Lung) tanks are perfect for vapers who prefer a more traditional and restricted inhale, mimicking the sensation of smoking. These tanks feature coils with higher resistance (typically above 1.0 ohm) and a narrower airflow, which allows for a tighter draw and a focus on flavour.

If you're a transitioning smoker trying to quit cigarettes, MTL tanks are what you want to be browsing. We stock MTL tanks from popular brands including Innokin, Aspire, Voopoo and more. Pair MTL tanks with 50/50 e-liquids such as either nic salts or freebase nicotine e-liquid to get the best results.

Sub-Ohm Tanks

Most vape tanks on the market are sub-ohm tanks, and these deliver a direct-to-lung (DTL) inhale. This is because sub-ohm tanks are to be used with low resistance coils of less than 1.0ohm, resulting in much larger vapour production. The lower the resistance, the bigger the vapour cloud will be.

Lower resistance coils heat more quickly and allow more current to flow through them, which means more liquid is vaporised and therefore vapers can enjoy more vapour and better flavour. Sub-ohm tanks also usually have a wide mouthpiece and come with features such adjustable airflows to better control the amount of vapour that you inhale. When using a sub-ohm tank, it is best to use a shortfill e-liquid as these tanks require vape juice that has higher amounts of VG.

Rebuildable Tanks

Rebuildable tanks, also known as RTAs, offer the ultimate customisation and control over your vaping experience. These tanks allow users to build and install their own coils, fine-tuning the details such as coil resistance, wicking material, and airflow to suit their preferences.

With RTAs, vapers can achieve a personalised balance of flavour and vapour production, tailoring their setup to their exact specifications. Rebuildable tanks are favoured by the veterans of the vaping world and those who enjoy the satisfaction of building their own coils and experimenting with different setups.

Vape Tanks FAQs

In terms of appearance, MTL tanks and sub-ohm tanks look very similar. They both sport similar designs however the main contrast between these two types of tanks is that MTL tanks have much more restricted airflows. Because of this, these tanks are designed to also be used with vape juice that has equal ratios of VG and PG such as nic salts or 50/50 e-liquids. When you inhale with a MTL tank, you first take the vapour in your mouth and then inhale it into your lungs before finally exhaling. In contrast, sub-ohm tanks require a direct-to-lung style vape as the airflow is a lot wider in order to compensate for the larger amounts of vapour being produced.

Coil lifespan varies depending on usage, e-liquid composition, and vaping habits. On average, coils may last between one to three weeks. Signs that it's time to replace the coil include a burnt taste, decreased vapour production, or a flooded tank.

Learn about how to know when to replace your coil by reading our informative blog, helping you spot all the tell-tale signs of a burnt out coil.

This question is hard to answer as it really comes down to personal preference and what exactly you are trying to get out of your vaping experience. What we can say is that we guarantee you will be able to find a tank from a top quality brand such as Innokin, Geekvape, Freemax and more.

To clean your vape tank, disassemble it and rinse all components (excluding the coil) with warm water. Use a soft brush or cotton swab to remove any residue. Allow the tank to dry thoroughly before reassembly. For a complete, detailed breakdown check out our blog on how to clean your vape tank

While vape juice usually won't stain your vape tank, it can clog your coils and cause other problems. Cleaning regularly will allow you to get the best performance from your vape because residue from e-liquid can be detrimental to your coils. VG (Vegetable Glycerin) and sweeteners used in e-liquids can impair vapour production and make your vape taste burnt.

The best frequency to clean your vape tank is once a week, although if you don't vape often once a month is fine. You should also clean your tank before you fill it with a new e-liquid in order to get the best performance out of your vape juice.Vape tanks have different threading and connections, so it's essential to ensure compatibility with your device. Most tanks use 510 threading, which is widely supported, but it's always best to check the specifications or consult your device's manual.
